“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.’” (Psalm 139:13, ESV)
My Nicholas,
I want you to know son, that we are so proud of you. It’s hard to believe that the time finally came last night for you to walk across that stage to get your high school diploma. It sure was a sweet blessing – in the midst of so many other sweet blessings – that you’ve given to us.
And oh my… how has the time gone by so quickly?
It’s both, humbling and funny, when looking back on how you began….
Humbling because we are only human.
Funny because – you sure have proved that we are only human. And oh how sweet this truth is.
It’s been about 20 years now, since I carried you in my belly pouch, when the doctors drifted into that cold and dreary hospital room after just completing another ultrasound.
You see, the doctors wanted to explain to me that you’d be born with a physical deformity. That you’d be born with a hole in your belly… where all your intestines would be oozing out. But this was only the beginning of the conversation.
After more words, the doctors warned me of all the other complications you may have. A list that seemed to go on and on and on….
And then for the finale, I was warned that you may not live long after birth. And that you may even die before I even had the chance to give you birth. And that I should even consider aborting you.
Well I want you to know that on that day… I heard the doctors.
But I also knew that God – is, was, and will always be – God.
Nicholas, I need you to know something that I don’t ever want you to forget.
God is the Author of life.
So even when things come into your life that feel – Broken. Unfixable. Deadening – You need to know that God will work it all out together for your good. No matter what or who or when or how it is broken.
It’s hard to put into words, but everything son, no matter how painful – God will use in your life – for your good. I promise.
Now this doesn’t mean that there won’t be – Brokenness. And unfixable things. And even death.
It just means that in these things, you will find life through Jesus Christ.
And son, I am so grateful to God…. that He gave me the gift of you.
I will always love you,
Mom
