“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’” (Joshua 5:13-14, NIV)
So many of us are familiar with the story of Jericho in the Old Testament. It’s the story tucked away in Joshua 6 where we find the Israelites marching around the City of Jericho and with a loud shout the wall comes crashing down.
God’s victory of Jericho was monumental, because having victory in Jericho made it possible for the Israelites to move north and south, and continue on to win victory after victory in other key cities.
With each and every victory, the Israelites grew closer to claiming God’s promise from so many years before…. the promise of God bringing His people to the land flowing with milk and honey. The Land of Canaan.
The story of Jericho is beautiful enough, but what I find most beautiful…. are the words spoken right before they get to Jericho.
“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’” (Joshua 5:13-14)
Did you hear the question Joshua asked? “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
And did you hear the man’s response? “Neither.”
What should this tell us?
Well…. it should tell us that God is never on one person’s side. Nor on the side of a group of people.
In fact…. God is never on any side.
God only wants us to be on His side.
Just think about how different the world would look IF….
We stopped begging for God to be on our side…. And we started begging for the world to be on His side.
And think about how different the world would look IF….
We stopped asking God to look out for us…. And we just started looking out for what matters to God.
So I ask you…. Are you on God’s side?
God bless! Love you all!!
